Why invest in the Tourism Sector in Kerala ?
  • Travel and Tourism is a US$41.8-billion industry in India, 5.3% of GDP
  • 4.9 million international tourist arrivals in 2007, an increase of over 9% from the previous year
  • 382 million domestic visits estimated in 2006; the domestic tourism market grew at about 12% CAGR in the last 5 years
  • Only 109,000 rooms in 1,980 hotels across the country registered in 2006*
  • Five-star hotel rooms constitute 27%, four-star 7.5% and three-star 22%
  • All India industrywide occupancy of over 66.9% in 2006-07
  • Scarcity of rooms in several tourist destinations such as Munnar, Cochin (Kochi), Trivandrum (Thiruvananthapuram) & Thekkady (Periyar) has resulted in rates of over US$300 per night
  • The Tourism industry in Kerala is dominated by 3-4 large Indian hotel owner-managers – The Taj Group, KTDC, ITC, Leela and CGH Earth
  • Most major international chains like Starwood, Hilton, Le Meridien, Kempinski, Park Inn, are represented by management or franchise contracts. Aman and Accor plan to own hotels as well
  • Compounded growth in the last 5 years, in terms of rooms added, was the strongest in the five-star deluxe category at 6%
Tourism Potential in Kerala
  • Favourable demographics and rapid economic growth point to a long-term secular uptrend in the domestic demand for hotels – for business and leisure
  • International inbound traffic is expected to grow rapidly with increasing investment and trade activity
    • WTTC has identified India as one of the fastest growing countries in terms of tourism deman
    • India has benefited from an aggressive promotion campaign and an out-performing econom
  • The growth momentum in domestic and international travel is expected to receive a further boost with more budget airlines/lower air-fares, open sky policies and expected improvements in travel infrastructure (roads, airports, railways)
  • There are opportunities in all price and value chain segments due to the shortage of hotel stock; plans are on to increase quality accommodation from the current 110,000 rooms to 200,000 rooms by 2011

Foreign tourist arrivals to Kerala has crossed 3.46 lakhs mark in 2005, according to the provisional tourist statistics of Kerala Tourism. Foreign tourists arrivals to the state is estimated as 346499 during the period. Foreign Exchange Earnings has also recorded a growth of 22.54 per cent. The total revenue (including direct and indirect) generated from tourism in 2005 is estimated as Rs.7738 crores, an increase of 13.31 per cent
 
Tourists inflow from Australia
In the last three years the tourist arrivals from Australia to India have almost doubled to a record figure of 1,00,000. However India aims to double tourist inflow from Australia to 200,000 in the next three years
 
Tourists inflow from Britain
Every year about 3000,000 tourists from Britain visit India for both business as well as leisure.
 
Tourists to India spend more.
Tourists to India spent $ 372 on their visa cards in the year of 2005. This is a 25% rise from the year 2004 thereby, making India the fastest growing Asia -Pacific market for the International tourist spending. According to the World Travel and Tourism Council , the Indian tourism demand will grow at an annual 8.8 % over the next ten years, fueled by higher incomes and lower air fares
 
Earnings on Tourism
In 2005 India earned US $ 6.9 billion from inbound foreign tourists, which is more than twice the US $3.1 billion earned during the year 2002. According to the latest balance of payments figures released by the Reserve Bank Of India, 2005 was the year of fastest growth in forex inflows from foreign travel, during which inflows went up 36 %.

With nearly 140 three and two star hotels, Kerala has turned into a major hot spot for foreign tourists
 
Mode of transport
Air continued to be the predominant mode of travel for the tourists coming to India. However arrivals by sea were negligible.
 
Age- Group factor
An average foreign tourist is between age group of 20-40 years.
 
Best time for tourists arrivals
October to February is considered to be the peak season for travel by foreigners for business as well as leisure purposes.
